Although Bierstadt first traveled west in 1859, it was not until his second trip n 1863 that he actually saw the splendor of the Yosemite Valley. Returning to his New York studio, he worked from countless sketches to produce an epic panorama. When the painting was first exhibited in April 1865, The San Francisco Evening Bulletin declared "until this picture was painted, the Eastern public had never enjoyed an opportunity to see any views of Yosemite except the small photographs and woodcuts which were plentifully issued here." 20 - 5x7 cards and envelopes.
